UK Government Urges Wartime Prep as Expert Predicts Domestic Conflict

A stark warning from the UK government has gripped the nation, with the National Security Strategy urging Britons to “actively prepare” for war on home soil.

By Preston Bates

The strategy, as reported by The Mirror and Daily Mail last week, outlines a perilous global landscape, citing Russian cyberattacks, Iranian sabotage, and potential disruptions to energy and supply chains.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, addressing NATO leaders in The Hague, underscored the urgency, noting that Britain faces “very frequent and very serious” cyberattacks daily. The strategy calls for a wartime mindset, invoking the resilience of World War II, and demands a collective effort to safeguard critical infrastructure against adversaries like Russia, Iran, North Korea, and even China.

This alarming directive resonates chillingly with the warnings of Dr. David Betz, a professor of War Studies at King’s College London, who recently appeared on the Heretics podcast to discuss the looming specter of civil war in the UK. Betz, a respected academic known for his work on insurgency and information warfare, predicts a domestic conflict within five years, driven by deep societal fractures.

Book Giveaways to try outside of GoodReads

Authors there are more ways to use your ARC to get reviews than you may think.

If you were looking for an alternative to GoodReads or simply something to do in addition, then check these out. Some services and communities are for novels only and some genres may be more effective than others.

1. Book sirens: Do this first, and in the first 6
months because they don’t let you use
them for your book after that amount of
time has passed.

2. Librarything: Free! Same deal. Has to
be in the first few months.

3. Voracious readers: This is only free for your first book for about 20 arc readers. Great place
starting, but make sure your book is up to
par as again you can only use them for free
once, so don’t submit with a weak cover.

4. Hidden Gems: Apply now, most have about
a year wait list (mine was for fantasy) also
keep your expectations low depending on
your category. My cover is for a dark
fantasy book, and I think I only received 4
ARC readers. They told me they don’t really
have a base for that last time I used it

5. Netgalley: Make sure you use a co-op so
you can get your book up for cheap. Also,
only go for 1 month, not 3 or longer, as you
get diminishing returns after that period, so
the cost isn’t worth it.

    Decluttering Made Easy

Let’s spring into cleaning this May!

Decluttering doesn’t have to feel like a dreaded chore—it can actually be an enjoyable and even transformative experience. One of the best ways to start is by sorting items into three piles: YesMaybe, and No. The Yes pile consists of things you use regularly and truly need. The Maybe pile is for items you’re unsure about—set them aside for a month, and if you don’t reach for them, it’s time to let them go. The No pile includes things that no longer serve a purpose. Many of these can be donated to shelters, thrift stores, or community centers, giving them a second life instead of contributing to landfill waste.

To make the process more enjoyable, some people like to turn on their favorite music, sip a coffee, or even use CBD or THC to help ease into a focused and relaxed cleaning flow. Turning cleaning into a game—like setting timers or rewarding yourself after tackling a tough area—can make a big difference. While cleaning, it’s important to use gloves when handling harsh chemicals to protect your skin from dryness and harmful absorption. Also, never mix chemicals like bleach and ammonia, as this can create toxic fumes. For dusting, consider using static cloths instead of traditional dusters if you’re allergic—these trap dust rather than stirring it up.

Instead of tossing worn-out clothes that aren’t donation-worthy, repurpose them for cleaning rags—especially useful for sopping up grease spills before throwing them away. Old toothbrushes are also great for scrubbing hard-to-reach areas like grout and faucet bases. Decluttering isn’t just about clearing space; it’s about creating an environment that feels fresh, functional, and inspiring. By making it a fun, mindful practice, you might even find yourself looking forward to your next cleaning session!
